| | Selbstdarstellung: | | The Anthology of Art Art and Theory in Dialogue. The Anthology of Art offers an Internet-based platform for dialogue between artists and art theorists from all over the world. Its theme is the vision of art in art and its relationship to theoretical discourse. PROJECT DESCRIPTION ........................... The appropriation of art by its promoting institutions has shown that art and the discourse about it have long been interconnected, placing equal emphasis on thorough theoretical reflection and on the work of art itself. Art is no longer merely presentation; it reflects the conditions of its own production and promotion. The Anthology of Art, instead of presupposing the connection between production and theory, is investigating, and demonstrating it. At the same time, it confronts the global medium of the Internet with the traditional relationships within international art. As a result this experiment provides information about the endeavour of contemporary artistic process. "What could your vision, in the context of contemporary art, be, of an "undiscovered" art? The twelve contributions - either image or text - will be accessible in the Internet for a fortnight. Each of the artists will invite one other artist (the theorists another theorist) to make a contribution to the Anthology of Art, which will replace the one of the predecessor after two weeks. So one will never find more than twelve contributions on the Anthology's site in the www at one time. The fortnightly rotation of contributions will continue until to the end of the project, after one year. All the contributions will be collected, and published, when the project is completed. Since every artist or theorist will be allowed only one contribution, the Anthology of Art will comprise 26 x 12 = 312 different contributions within the 26 fortnights of the project, 156 pictures as well as 156 texts. The intention is, beyond compiling a representative collection of contemporary presentations and statements, to investigate a production process in dialogue form, without interference by its initiators. It is implicitly assumed that today within the field of communication about art, one no longer questions art itself. On the contrary: everything concerning art has the tendency to transform into art as well. The Anthology tests the limits of this tendency: will it bring about the creation of a pluralistic work, produced by a great number of independent authors? And will this form of production reflect a global society more adequately than the traditional curated model of presentation? The Anthology of Art The year long process of the Anthology's creation concludes in July 2002 - concurrent with the opening of the new library of the Academy of Fine Arts in Braunschweig (and as a contribution to it). Six months later, at the end of 2002, a printed version including all pictures and texts will be published, containing a synopsis of all texts in English. Resumé The aim of the project is to initiate a dialogue between art and theory as an autonomous work in progress. A heterogeneous international community will be created by the principle of selective invitation. The contacts between the contributors will intensify existing relationships while initiating unexpected encounters. The international and interdisciplinary claim of modernism has often been taken for granted. It is now called into question by the internet-facilitated simultaneous, ephemeral and aleatoric confrontations of different regions of the world, which are no longer centres nor periphery. |
