Mining and labour. A historical GIS for the Euregio Meuse-Rhine
The proposed paper addresses the development of a historical GIS to study mining labour markets in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine (1910-1960). Coal mining expanded in the twentieth century in the border regions that make up the actual Euregio Meuse-Rhine (Belgian and Dutch Limburg, the province of Liege and the Aachen area). The construction of a historical GIS on this topic is part of a larger project aiming to compare the development of the mining labour markets in these four areas. By mapping geographical, social and economic data of the four regional (cross border) mining labour markets in a GIS, we will try to reveal similarities or differences in recruitment, labour specialisation, labour migration and mobility. This paper on mining labour markets presents the methodological questions, difficulties and challenges of developing a historical GIS with geographical data and research material from different countries for more than one period.
