Male and Female Historians and the Cultures of Commemoration: The Finnish Case
The absence of women historians from the canon of national historiography can not be explained simply by women's absence in the field of scholarship. The fact of the existence of women professionals but their simultaneous invisibility compels us to turn to different forms of exclusion. In my paper, the focus is laid on an analysis of the gendered forms of memorizing and commemorating male and female historians. My analysis is based on obituaries published in the scholarly press from the 19th century onwards. I will also discuss other acdemic arenas and their cuktures of commemoration. In addition, I will make interviews in order to get insight into more informal ways of memorizing.
