At heart of Education', Repression', and Rehabilitation's Strategies : a Paradox. Girl's Reform School's Practices, Belgium 1920-1965
This research is conducted on the Belgian public penitentiary institutions for female juveniles delinquents, between 1912 and 1965. The trajectories of 'incorrigible' girls and young women of the public reform school of Bruges is examined through the study of both ideas, norms and practices (on sexuality, morality, education, repression). The population of Bruges consisted of the "rejects" and the "throw-outs" of the system : the girls that none of other institutions wanted to keep (because of venereal diseases, pregnancy or 'unruly' behaviour). This particular focus and approach allows to clearly reveal the paradox, limits and failures of institutional responses to juvenile delinquency, particularly in relation to 'incorrigible' behaviour of girls. The research demonstrates how education', repression' and rehabilitation's strategies acted both in State' and Institution's interests as in girls interests. And the ambiguities between objectives means ambiguities in results too...
