Mrs Stone & Dr Smellie: birth attendants and their patients in the eighteenth century
This paper focuses on patient outcomes in terms of maternal, fetal and neonatal mortality in eighteenth-century England. It contrasts the work of a female midwife, Mrs Sarah Stone (Somerset), and a man-midwife, Dr William Smellie (London), in term of thei knowledge and practice. It also discusses the many methodological problems associated with linking midwifery practice and patient outcomes in the past.
