Citizenship and the decline of the Roman economy
The military and political crisis that gripped the Roman Empire in the third century AD is traditionally seen as the explanation for the erosion of the value of Roman citizenship, and the trend to rougher social relations. Instead, I will argue that this disintegration of the Roman state and the decline in the entitlements of citizenship can be explained better from a preceding economic crisis.
