The Contested Waterjar. Moroccan Home-making in a Diasporic Context
| In a diasporic context, creating a home consists of ongoing process of positioning oneself and being positioned in relations to others, who have a voice in where and to whom we are allowed or expected to belong. On the basis of a longitudinal life story project, in this presentation Ang’s contention that the meaning of ‘where you’re from’ is articulated in response to the specific situation of ‘where you’re at’ will be illustrated by analysing stories behind cherished Moroccan objects in the homes of Moroccan-Dutch citizens. It will be argued that in order to (re)create a Moroccan taste of home, subsequent generations of Moroccan-Dutch citizens surround themselves with different objects. Similarly, it will be argued that the meaning of the same material markers of an imaginary Moroccan homeland may vary among different people and as (political) circumstances change.
