Measuring Land Use Change in Britain since the 1930s
| We know a vast amount about how the population of Britain has changed, from sources like the census, but far less about how the country itself has changed. This paper presents a comparison between data gathered by on-the-ground land utilisation surveys, conducted via local schools, and modern remote sensed data. The main survey is the Land Utilisation Survey of Great Britain, organised by L Dudley Stamp in the 1930s, but we also use data from the Land Use UK Survey in the 1990s which can be directly compared with remote sensed data from the same period. The paper combines a national overview with case studies of the area around Birmingham and the Dartmoor National Park.
