Agricultural Extension Programmes in Postwar Europe: A Comparative Study of Two Extreme Cases: Spain and the Netherlands (1946 - 1973)
| This text proposes a comparative approach (based on scientific
literature) to the operation of two state models of agricultural
extension in postwar Europe (1946 - 1973): the Dutch and the Spanish,
as well as the role they each played in the modernization of their
respective "domestic agricultures”. Beyond the mere characterization
of their origins, stages, objectives and the sociology of the
agricultural extension services, we are interested in analyzing their
degree of success, compared to their initial objectives, in terms of
central matters such as the incorporation of new technology by
farmers, the introduction of group farming, or the improvement of
living conditions amongst the rural societies they influenced. One of
our main objectives is to reflect upon how the different political
contexts implied certain conditioners for the application (either
negotiated by the State or directly imposed on the civil society) of
the agricultural industrialization model represented by the Green
Revolution.
