The Making of Masculinity and Class among Swedish Industrialists 1918 to 1939
During the interwar period Sweden underwent a series of changes related to the rapid urbanization of the country, industrialization, democratization, the rise of the workers movement to governmental power and the formation and formulation of the emerging welfare state. What were the cultural expressions of class among the leading industrialists of the time, and what were their expressions of masculinity? I will in this paper investigate these questions with the help of RW Connells term “hegemonic masculinity” and with a source material collected from letters sent from members of three of Swedens most prominent families of industrialist at the time: Wallenberg, Wehtje and Broström.
