The Incredible Famine, 1876-1879. A Case Study of the Province of Henan
This article is the first one of a sequence of articles, which entails to be part of a comparative study of the state’s intervention during food crisis in the rural province of Henan, China, during the 19th and 20th century. The article studies one of the most devastating famines in the world, the Incredible Famine of 1876-1879, where between nine and thirteen million people died in China. The author analyzes the economic crisis from both food availability decline and food entitlement decline, having in consideration production, trade, own-labor, and transfer entitlement. Based on Amartya Sens’s approach on famine analysis, the author demonstrates that, in this case, lack of democracy perpetuates famine in Henan Province, historically one the poorest regions in the country.
