| This paper investigates the development of a key administrative technique to get hold of the territory: the set-up of street numbers and the implementation of population statistics in the 18th century Habsburg Monarchy. The focus will be put on the difficulties the administrative personel was confronted with when implementing this registration process and the rationales behind the resistance to it.
