Collection of Oral Experiences of Catalan Women regarding the Civil War: Elements of Trauma and Nostalgia in Biographies and History
From 1983 to 1986, a team of students of Contemporary Spanish History at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili led by Dr Maria Anṭnia Ferrer i Bosch recorded various people over the age of 60 talking about their experiences of living through the Second Republic, the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. The aim was to record the perspectives of the “silent masses” regarding these periods in history and the resulting collection of oral experiences is now housed in the Historical Archive of Tarragona. The recordings were made more than forty years after the end of the Civil War and several years after the end of the dictatorship at a point when democracy had been re-established and the country had recovered from the attempted coup d’état in 1981. This meant that enough time had elapsed to allow the interviewees to view the historical events from a different perspective.
