The Spanish Inquisition and Protestant soldiers in Spanish service
| This paper addresses the subject of Protestant soldiers in Spanish service in Spain and its dependencies, by using trial summaries from the Holy Office. The Spanish Inquisition tried a number of protestant soldiers for heresy, while many denounced themselves as heretics in order to be allowed to convert to Catholicism. The most Catholic monarchs use of heretics as troops crashed with the political drive towards religious uniformity, while the entry of Lutherans and Calvinists into Spanish service raises questions of the importance of the individuals' religious identity in early modern European warfare.
