Between maritime horizons and land realities: different ways of living violence (Portugal, 1750-1789)
| Based in a regional approach, centred in the second major city of the kingdom and its nearest hinterland, the papers aims to evaluate differences and similarities between sensibilities in violent relationships in different kind of spaces in the second half of the 18th century. By the known dependencies and social diversity, the paper analyses foreign communities, port realities, fishery communities, small rural villages, the grand city and medium-dimension towns. In each space we seek to study the impact legislative changes and control action of the Despotic State in everyday practises. We speak of a space that, near, moves in different rhythms. Different spaces, had different specificities in living violence by different social and occupational profiles, different communities’ dimension, rural, urban or maritime spaces, different roles of men and women, so… different motivations and mobiles.
