Integrating the 18th century into the history of globalization
Recent research on the history of globalization has argued for various periodizations and breaks. Despite of the different views that are brought forward it is remarkable that few contributions go beyond the beginning of the 19th century. On the other hand, particularly world historians in the U.S. stress the year 1500 as a watershed in the development of global connections, encounters and entanglements while making no further distinction in regard to quantity and quality of existing degree of connectivity. In my paper I would like to take a closer look at the 18th century which presents a empty space in the history of globalization so far. I want to do so in discussing recent research on transnational and global dimensions of that time period and in giving an overview that might allow a better placing and integration of that century into the overall historicization of globalization processes.
