Shaming and economic crime in 19th century Sweden
During the 19th century the economic system of Sweden as most of Europe was fundamentally transformed. Consequently the prerequisities for economic crime also changed. At the beginning of the century the popular legal culture was focused on honour, and economic crime was considered as shameful. While the actual pattern of crime may not have altered, the attitudes towards economic activities and gain seem to have become more affirmative. The culture of honour and shaming disintegrated - but the popular attitude still condemned upper- or middleclass persons who engaged in economic crime.
