Defining a New Family - The Swedish Way of Foreign Adoption
During the 1960s, international adoptions increased in number concurrent with a decrease in national adoptions, likely as a consequence of both a relatively more open debate about abortion legislation as well as the introduction of the Pill to Sweden. In the public debate, issues related to the appropriateness of transferring these coloured children to Sweden as well as issues related to the difficulties for presumptive adoptive parents to receive aid, had been voiced. What occured when "the colored children" arrived to "the blonde and blue-eyed swedish" Sweden? In this paper I investigate how aspects such as identity and citizenship both changed and did not change the perception of the family.
