Single, Servant, and Slave: vulnerable and resourceful women in early modern Portugal
Women who did not have the protection of their families ran the greatest risk of exploitation and abuse in early modern Europe. Thus, single women alone in towns working as domestic servants were especially vulnerable, as were slave women who were at the mercy of their owners. Undoubtedly the stories of some of these women, if their stories had been recorded, would make for some horrific tales. The limited evidence that survived that sheds some light on their lives offers little from their own point of view, but one can garner some understanding nonetheless by looking at documents that make some reference to the circumstances of these women. This presentation will focus on single, servant, and slave women by examining a number of transactions recorded in notarial collections from early modern Portugal, and will show the extent to which these women were resourceful within the constraints of their vulnerable positions in society.
