A Sense of Place: Urban Stories in postwar Dutch Cities
The specific feeling and customs that are generated by a place, arise through many years'use of it by certain groups and the existence of routines. The structure of a physical space appears to be rather strong, despite the growing importance of the virtual space. This is not only the result of social and cultural factors. These can be summarized in what we call the collective memory of a city. Which leads us to the question: how have urban stories evolved in the course of the 20th century? What is the core of it, and in which manners are they passed to next generations? In the paper I will focus on a recent project about the way (former) inhabitants of The Hague memorize all kind of aspects of their city in the fifties, sixties and seventies. By activating the collective memory in the largest local newspaper and on Internet, it became possible in three years time to collect thousands of stories. This method will be explored further in the paper.
