Trading with a handcart. Peddling in Dutch cities in the 1930s
During the crisis of the 1930s setting up a small trading business was a common practice for many unemployed. In order to survive the economic difficult times self-employed labour was one of the livings-strategies for the poor. In this paper I want to investigate into a couple of Dutch cities (incl. Amsterdam and Delft). Making use of local government licenses and investigations by contemporaries I try to establish how many pedlars were active. The existence of client dossiers of the social services department in Amsterdam and Delft allows for an analysis of the success of pedlars in these cities. Was peddling a viable livings strategie or rather a dead end? Finally, the reactions of local government and other local actors to pedlars will be studied.
