Isabel de Aragão: an exemplary queen
Isabel de Aragão was, for Portugal, a queen with an exemplary behaviour. Woman of its time, she intervened directly in political life, and helped D. Dinis, hers husband, in several activities concerned with the relations with the other Iberian kings. The most acceptable role for a queen came to be that of intercessor. Isabel was a fountain of compassion and an intermediary between the laity and Christ. She founded a number of religious institutions and regularly gave charity to the poor. At the same time, she was able to expand the amount of land given to her use, thus providing a source of revenue for the maintenance of her household and for patronage that would be independent of royal largesse.
