The Method and National History: method books in Finland
The paper analysis the method books of history published in Finland in the 20th century. The questions are: why and by whom the books were published, what was their impact in the field, and what do the books tell about the ways of understanding historical research, its purpose, logic and working methods. The analysis concentrates to study the relationship between national historical imagination and disciplinary historical thinking (epistemology). The paper tries to describe how the "machine" works: how historical knowledge is produced in a certain context.
