Female Health Workers and the Professionalisation of Midwifery and Nursing in Ecuador, 1890-1950
This paper examines Ecuadorian women working in the fields of midwifery and nursing in the late-nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries. It asks precisely what kinds of women were most likely to enter these new fields of professional work, and what challenges they faced in doing so. An examination of their lives as students and then workers reveals a great deal about gender ideologies and class relations in Ecuador, as well as the politics of higher education and professional work.
