Monumental Memories: Constructing Nationhood in Argentina and Uruguay
At the turn of the twentieth century, both Argentina and Uruguay faced with the problem of assimilating a large influx of European immigrants into American identities, used monuments to present national history and national values to their respective populations. Specifically the paper concentrates on the representation of the "gaucho" and the "indio", how and where they were used, and the explicit and implicit messages conveyed in these public statues.
