Colectivisation, Identity and Memory in a Village of Russian Old Believers, Dobrogea region
Constantin Iordachi The paper explores the impact of collectivisation on the social structure and collective identity of a community of Russian Old Belivers from the province of Dobrogea. It is argued that the collectivisation of land property and the modernizing campaign conducted by the state transformed the village from a closed ethno-confesional “nativist” community into a semi-open community, characterised by migration, inter-marriages and growing secularism. Based on oral interviews, the paper attempts to detect changes in the corporate identity of the Old Believers as reflected in discourses about self, religion and community in relation to the experience of collectivisation.
