The "noble“ values of the descendants of Austro-Czech nobility – a trap of oral history?
| Based on the interviews made with 25 descendants of Austro-Bohemian nobility, the paper will reflect upon the ways their memory work. What values do they appreciate? Do they consider themselves as „noblemen“? How are their statements connected with their past or the history of their family? The paper will also discuss a difference between those who spent their lives in the communist regime and those who emigrated abroad, between those who emigrated into the countries where the noble titles exist and those who emigrated into the countries without nobility, between those who returned after the collapse of the communist regime and those who still live abroad.
Then, the paper will try to explain the obvious even if not explicitly expressed insistance of the narrators on their „noble code“ and will try to analyze this strategy connecting it to their identity and self-image.
Finally, the paper will discuss the originality of the memories „of noble origine“ and the way they interact with the official and public memory.
