Les Demoiselles Grévistes:” Class, Gender and Ethnicity in the 1937 Lewiston-Auburn, Maine Shoe Strike
In this study of a failed 1937 strike by 4,500 mostly francophone shoeworkers I investigate the strengths and contradictions of class gender and ethnicity to explain the workers' loss, paying particular attention to the gendered nature of the streets and the courtroom, the power of conflicting ethnicities and the use by the employers of ethnicity and localism to defeat both the workers and the national government.
