Women and Men in Paris, 1870-1939: Gender and Migration
This paper places information about Bretons in Paris people from a western province that sometimes expresses themselves as an ethnic or minority group and who were perceived to be distinct from other French at this time in the context of a) the very well-developed literature on gender and migration and b) the much less well developed understanding of gender and migration within France. It examines four key areas of distinction between men and women migrants: auspices of migration, gendered images of migrants, patterns of intermarriage, and occupations.
