Benefits of organised competition in Classical Greece
| This paper discusses issues of non-elite participation, rivalry and social cohesion raised by the remarkable extent of organised athletic and musical games and contests at various levels, from the local to the Panhellenic, in many cities of classical Greece, especially Athens. It will also consider the role played in the appeal of these contests of the viewing of (often naked) male bodies, and the debate on the attitudes to same-sex attraction and love found in different social classes.
