Beyond the proper age at marriage: social trajectories to final celibacy in early nineteenth century Geneva
This paper will examine how women reached final celibacy in mid-nineteenth century Geneva, the 'Calvinist Rome'. Single females aged 45-54 will be observed in the city censuses of 1843 and 1837. Our data base contains also the censuses of 1831, 1828, 1822 and 1816 and the individual notices have been linked from census to census. So, we will look at the past biographies of those women to identify the family and socio-professional histories that led them to final celibacy, and how those lives differed from the ones of fellows of the same age, status and origin who avoided such fate.
