West versus East? Nutritional policy in the two Germanies 1945-1964
| One of the most important political aims of the Nazi Regime was to make Germany independent from food imports. For this purpose, it initiated agricultural and nutritional research. On the basis of a sketch of the main lines of nutritional research between 1933 and 1945, the paper looks at the development in the two German States after 1945. Starting from similar positions, the research on both sides of the wall was orientated towards different models of how to organize and how to conduct research. Moreover, it was orientated towards different models of consumption on the one side and towards different views of the responsibility of the state for the economic and physical wellbeing of its citizens on the other. Taking into account the high degree of personal continuity in both German states after 1945 the paper will reconstruct the positions which were developed in East and West Germany and will ask for the impact on the “real” nutritional situation of the people.
