Chinese fashion, architecture and everyday life in Piedmont in 18th century
All along the 18th century, in Europe we can observe the growing of the Chinese taste: gardens pavilions, the English-chinese garden type, pieces of furniture, vases, little statues, tea sets, wallpapers, lacque panels, little room completely decorated in the Chinese style or, often, whole apartments in the same way. This taste belongs to the courts and to the nobility, from Great Britain to Russia. This paper aims to investigate how in the Kingdom of Sardinia (Piedmont, Italy) this taste was accepted, how the Chinese fashion displayed its shape in architecture and decoration, and what it meant for the noblemen, the courtiers and the royal family who ordered the decoration of rooms in such style. For example we can state that, usually, in the 18th century, in Piedmont a female dressing room was a Chinese vieux-lacque closet, but also that not every Chinese closet had such a use. The Chinese fashion melted with everyday life and, at the same time, was a symbol of up to date culture.
