The councillor's dilemma. Political competition in third-century Roman Egypt
| This paper addresses the nature of political competition in the small cities that dotted the Roman world on the basis of the evidence from the papyri of third-century Roman Egypt. I argue that political competition was largely an internal affair of members of the local elites; that competition centred on nomination to office; and that competition was negative: it centred on office avoidance, not on office holding.
