Selbstdarstellung:
Established formally in 1969, the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (CAHJP) were founded in 1938 as the Jewish Historical General Archives. Their aim is the reconstruction of an unbroken chain of historical documentation, reflecting the collective past of the Jewish people: a “Jewish National Archives." The conditions of Jewish life over the centuries of the Diaspora prevented the creation of any central body to gather and safeguard the documents that record Jewish life in each generation. Moreover, the frequent expulsions of the Jews from various countries and the outbursts of violence against them, culminating in the Nazi Holocaust of the 20th century, have caused the destruction of the vast majority of this documentation. The Central Archives have already rescued and preserved the archival remnants of hundreds of Jewish communities, organizations and public figures from all over the world. Many documents, Pinkassim and private collections were donated or deposited at the Archives by their owners. In this manner their ultimate preservation and availability to research were ensured. In order to supplement the often fragmentary records of Jewish origin, the Central Archives also carry out systematic surveys in non-Jewish archives to locate material relating to Jews. These surveys have so far uncovered millions of documents, some dating back to the 12th century. Lists of these sources have been compiled and a selection of the most important material has been microfilmed and made available to the public. This survey and microfilm project is still in progress. To date the Central Archives have assembled some 800 lists of documents relating to Jews, as well as a microfilm collection consisting of over 6,000,000 frames. The ultimate intention of the project is to create here, in Jerusalem, a central, comprehensive guide to sources on Jewish history in the Diaspora. The Central Archives' board of directors consists of representatives of the Government of Israel, the Jewish Agency for Israel, the Historical Society of Israel, the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv University and Bar-Ilan University. The Central Archives are a non-profit, tax-exempt, public institution.
