We have diverse literary collections and content In today's world of corporate publishing, value is placed on works that sell to broad markets. Quick turnover, high-visibility marketing campaigns for bestsellers, and corporate 'superstore' bookstores have all made it difficult for unique and older texts to be published. (Further, the costs this marketing adds to all books discourages leisure reading as a common practice.) The EServer (founded in 1990 as the English Server) attempts to provide an alternative niche for quality work. We offer 42 collections on such diverse topics as contemporary art, race, Internet studies, sexuality, drama, design, gender studies, accessible publishing and current political and social issues. In addition to written works, we publish hypertext, audio and even video recordings. Our collections grow as we welcome and encourage new contributions, and as we teach new members how to publish works to the Web and to the million or so readers who visit our site per week. We are a nonprofit organization Many online communities today offer 'free' web services and engage in database marketing, making profits by gathering and selling intellectual property from and about their members. The EServer, on the other hand, is a nonprofit organization: It was created and is run as a 'labor of love' by people who value a free and diverse publishing environment. All our equipment and administration costs are covered by volunteer labor, in-kind contributions, and donations by readers. There is no charge to become a member, and our collections are open to all readers (enough to keep you reading for years!). We are a community Are you working on a project, or do you have an idea that you want others to hear about? Do you already have a work that may need some editorial input? Do you think you have knowledge to help new writers in their endeavours? Become a member! Our coop provides a forum where your project can receive feedback and assistance from our members—and when you're ready, working with one of our collection editors, you can publish so that it can reach a worldwide audience. If you are not already familiar with the Server, we suggest that you start at the top left of this page with 'what it publishes' and work your way down the table of contents. If you are looking for information about a particular topic, use the search engine in the bottom left corner to search for a word or phrase. If you have any additional questions, send email to the Server's administrators at . |
