| | Selbstdarstellung: | | The distributed radio open project is a global radio broadcast network for the distribution of news and information. We believe that a free and democratic media is a fundamental building block to real political democracy. We are committed to changing the political and economic institutions that fuel the cycle of war, exploitation, racism, hate, violence and poverty. We strive to give voice to the thousands of grassroots struggles for freedom and justice around the world. About d.r.o.p. distributed radio open project this is an idea bred during the last radio experiences of no new round radio / no \/ wto horizontal radio project, indymedia centers radio in dc for S29/S30 and in genoa during summer 2001. the basic idea came from the will to bring the open information/communication model used in indymedia and other alternative media projects to the radio medium, first just webwise and then ehterwise. The basic idea is to setup a network of icecast servers streaming a continuous flow of information for 24 hours a day 7 days a week. the programming should be open to any indymedia or other open communication collective, and it will be filled up more and more as we go. the programming hours in between live streams will be covered by: music interactive streams, indyline (http://indyline.indymedia.nl), or rebroadcast of material from former priductions/broadcast/material uploaded on various information sites. Upon occasions the programming will be taken up by specifica project for long period (like the no \/ wto radio project or the stream which will come from brussels next december 14th). we are just beginning experimenting with the idea after a bit of discussion on the imc-audio lists following the no \/ wto horizontal radio project (http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-audio for archives). it's still a growing and evolving project, where people join in every day. coordination and developing place for the idea are the imc-audio list (http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-audio) and irc.indymedia.org #radio. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This page documents how the proposed Indymedia radio network would work. It is written from the perspective that things are up and running. That way when things really get running, we can just delete this paragraph and this page becomes the radio network's documentation. This documentation is in early development, although the network is currently running in the UK & US under the domain solipsists.org. When everything is working well, we can move it under the indymedia.org domain. Goals Indymedia's strength is that it allows anyone to post text, graphics, PDF, movies, sound, etc. Why not continue this tradition and allow anyone to stream? Suddenly, any indy journalist can tap into a permanent network that is stable and distributed world-wide. They'll be able to do this without having to ask a bunch of admins set it up for each event they want to cover. Notes Main stream will be in MP3 format 16/32 mono mp3 64 kpbs eventually if we ever get fm rebroadcasters If possible, mirror streams will be set up in a variety of formats, such as ogg & RealMedia. Central server will only allow mirrors to connect tech explanation starting from jebba material writing proposal nontech involvement invitation what script/program/stuff do we need to cover non live streaming times where do we put the schedule proposal for supporting the project with bandwidth how do we make non techies able to update the schedule where do we put the archive 1 hour talk, 15 minutes music - rough ratio Sources of Content uploading indyline taking part to the schedule we should find some way of including material from the radio.indymedia.org site Emails from the lists Original Proposal Further description Indyline Current Resources Server in the UK (radio.uk1.solipsists.org / radio.uk.solipsists.org) Server in the US (radio.us1.solipsists.org / radio.us.solipsists.org) autistici.org in Italy dyne.org in Austria pvl.at in Austria (?) Possibly location1.org/ossa Vino can rebroadcast at 16k Icecast streams set up & in place Jaromil has said he will customize his Linux encoding software for Indymedia. See muse.dyne.org/ for more info / download. Basilik is developing a system where people can upload MP3s, give them a time to expire, and they will play in a looping stream until they get expired. This should be integrated into the system to play when no one is broadcasting live. Perhaps it can also be on it's own channel running 24/7. See: indyline.indymedia.nl. www.microradio.net has indicated interest in the project. They have FM radio broadcasting skills and TODO Set up a system that syncronizes all servers so they know what is being broadcasting. The system as it is currently set up, will automatically mirror, but it doesn't give a description of the broadcast. PHP / perl / icedir Jaromil would like a gtk programmer to help with the GUI on muse. If at some point we want to go for 24/7/365 live radio, we'll need a calendaring system. www.phpgroupware.org (?) Needed Resources More servers in more countries More people to broadcast so there is live content as often as possible Misc (uncategorized) saloxin suggests we just have one main IMC official channel since there isn't much broadcasting being done right now (if I understand him correctly). I agree. Questions? Contact Jeff at: jeff@themoes.org or imc-audio@indymedia.org |
