| | Selbstdarstellung: | | The Digital Asia Library, based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a cooperative venture of The Ohio State University Libraries, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Libraries, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries. The project uses the expertise of subject area specialists and librarians to provide researchers and students with quick and easy access to high quality Asian Internet resources through a Web-based catalog. Catalog Contents The catalog includes freely available Internet resources on a broad range of disciplines in the social sciences such as business and economics, education, political science, and sociology and topics such as banking and finance, demography and population, environment, gender, health, industry and trade, and politics, government, and international relations. Resources are from various sources including academic, government, commercial, trade and industry, and non-governmental organizations. They include bibliographies and databases, data sets, newspapers and journals, research reports, homepages or government bodies and organizations, and more. Resources in English as well as Asian languages, including those in non-Roman script, are included in the catalog. See the Collection Scope for information about the contents of the Digital Asia Library catalog. Selection and Cataloging Methods Area subject specialists evaluate and select resources on the basis of quality criteria such as authority, accuracy, uniqueness, currency, organization and navigation features, and relevance to scholarly research. See the Selection Criteria for information about the critera used to evaluate and select resources. Professional librarians then catalog the resources according to Dublin Core, an emerging metadata standard for electronic resources. For more information about this standard, see the homepage of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. See the Cataloging Guidelines for information about the project's use of Dublin Core. The project participates in OCLC's Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC), a metadata creation system for bibliographic records describing electronic resources. Access to the Catalog Click on Search DAL to access the catalog. The project uses OCLC's SiteSearch. Records created by the project are also accessible through OCLC's WorldCat (link to University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries subscription), because resources added to CORC automatically become part of WorldCat. Funding The Digital Asia Library is funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant for Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access (Title VI, Section 606).
