Kyle, Gunhild, 'The marginalized majority', Scandinavian Journal of History 12 (1987) 1, 35-45 [The main theme at the world historical congress at Stuttgart in the summer of 1985 was "l'image de l'autre", and it was explained that what was meant was "étrangers, minoritaires, marginaux". However, one group was excluded from the discussion already in the introductory lecture, when it was pointed out that "toute discussion sur le problème complex de l'image de la femme" was ruled out. The image of woman is a part of the history of marginality, but with the difference that it relates to a majority of the human race.]

The private sphere of life was the "oikos" and the public sphere the "polis", the city-state. The "oikos" is understood as meaning the domestic and family household, which included property and slaves in addition to the members of the family household. The man or "kyrios" was the judicial head of the "oikos". The basis of the way of thought of the community was that men serve well in duties and functions of the "polis", while the "oikos" is the sphere and environment of the women. Studies of women's history concerning antiquity form an active and versatile field of research.]
